They say Robert Frank died today. Here is one of his pictures. A funeral in St. Helena, South Carolina. I like it because I imagine a white guy with a Swiss accent getting out of his car where his wife and young child are sitting and walking up to these black gentlemen outside a funeral in the segregated South and becoming invisible so that he can make this picture.
I find his photographs of the West to be more interesting, but his pictures of the South to be more resonant. Probably my own geography.
I like what Winogrand said about Frank’s picture of St. Francis in L.A. Something like, ‘His was better than mine.’ The guy in the middle there: his eyes are closed. And Frank is asking, ‘Are you looking? Are you paying attention?’ #robertfrank
